Pedestrian Overcrossing and Roundabout to Open at I-80 Gilman Interchange in Berkeley on Saturday May 11, 2024

Berkeley / Alameda County ― Caltrans has scheduled to open the pedestrian overcrossing at the Interstate 80 Gilman Interchange and reopen the Eastshore Highway to the public in Berkeley.

The pedestrian overcrossing will be open to the public at 6 a.m. Saturday, May 11 via paved approaches on the east side (Eastshore Highway) and on the west side at the Tom Bates Regional Sports Complex.  Staircases on both sides will be open at later time.

Additional Changes

AT 6 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, the Eastshore Highway will reopen on both sides of Gilman Street. The opening of the overcrossing and the Eastshore Highway is permanent.

At 6 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, a temporary roundabout will be placed on Gilman, west of the Second Street intersection. The temporary roundabout will remain in place during the current stage of the construction and will be converted to a permanent roundabout at later stage.

On Monday, May 13, traffic on Second Street between Gilman St. and Harrison will be switched back to its original traffic direction:  one-way traffic in the northbound direction.

Caltrans thanks pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists for your patience as we work to improve the Gilman intersection. Every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to the traveling public.

Proper signs and pavement delineation, as well as portable changeable message signs, will be installed to guide cyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

Pedestrians will not be allowed to cross under the I-80 bridge during this phase of construction; they should use the newly opened pedestrian overcrossing on the south side of the interchange.

While the overcrossing will be open to the public, pedestrians, cyclists and anyone using the roundabout should use caution, as it is in an active construction zone. All traffic approaching the roundabout is required to yield to the traffic already in the roundabout.
