Caltrans to Repave Encinal Avenue (SR-61) in City of Alameda Summer 2023-Spring 2024

CITY OF ALAMEDA / ALAMEDA COUNTY – Caltrans is scheduled to begin repaving and making other improvements to Encinal Avenue (SR-61) between Broadway and Sherman Street in Alameda in June, providing motorists with a smoother ride, and enhancing safety for pedestrians and wheelchair users.

Repaving work has begun at the intersection of Encinal Avenue and Sherman Street and will proceed in a southerly direction toward Broadway. Pavement resurfacing work is expected to conclude in spring of 2024.

In addition to repaving, the work includes upgrading existing curb ramps, enhancing crosswalk markings, upgrading signals with accessible pedestrian signals and installing vehicle speed feedback signs. This project will also incorporate Complete Streets elements, which includes the conversion of the existing two through lanes to one through lane in each direction, a center two-way left-turn lane, two Class II bicycle lanes, and parking within the project limits.

Caltrans will make every effort to minimize inconvenience as the project moves along. Traffic advisories, social media, traffic control measures, and appropriate signage will be utilized. We thank the traveling public for your patience as we work to enhance the Bay Area’s highways, bridges and tunnels.
