Overnight Closure of Gilman and Camelia Streets in Berkeley June 20, 21, and 22, 2023

Published:

BERKELEY / ALAMEDA COUNTY – Gilman and Camelia Streets will be closed between Fourth Street and Second Street in Berkeley overnight June 20 to accommodate construction on a roundabout that will enhance safety and ease of use of the Interstate 80 Gilman interchange.

Gilman Street will close between Second Street and Fourth Street at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, reopening by noon on Thursday, June 22. Camelia Street will also close at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and will remain permanently closed to pedestrians and all vehicular traffic.

During the closure, there will no pedestrian access through Gilman Street and Camelia Street through Third Street. Sidewalks will remain open on Gilman Street between Fourth Street and Third Street and on Gilman Street and Camelia Street as well as Gilman Street and Camelia Street between Third Street and Second Street.

Detours will be provided for vehicles to use Cedar Street and the Eastshore Highway. Signage will be present to guide motorists. Shuttles will be on site to assist with pedestrian access and will have four stops as follows: Gilman/Fourth, Camelia/Fourth, Gilman/Second, and Camelia/Second.

When Gilman Street reopens at noon Thursday, pedestrian and vehicle access will be restored on that street. Camelia Street will be permanently closed to through traffic on Third Street.

Caltrans is aware of the inconvenience and impacts the closures present to the traveling public and thanks the public for their patience as we work to improve the I-80 Gilman interchange.

The project will enhance safety and improve traffic operations along Gilman Street between West Frontage Road and 5th Street through the I-80 Interchange.

The main project components are two roundabouts at Gilman Street intersections on both sides of I-80, as well as a new bicycle/pedestrian overcrossing over I-80 and bicycle facilities at and near the interchange.  The project will also close the gap in the Bay Trail at the west end of Gilman Street and create a dedicated two-way cycle track along Gilman Street from the interchange to Fourth Street.
