Curb Ramp, Sidewalk, and Driveway Closures on Ashby Avenue (SR-13) In Berkeley’s Elmwood Neighborhood -- June Through Fall 2023

Bringing Curb Ramps into Compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act

BERKELEY / ALAMEDA COUNTY – Caltrans has scheduled temporary closures of some curb ramps, sidewalks and driveways at nine intersections along Ashby Avenue (SR-13) between Domingo Avenue and Mabel Street in Berkeley. The closures will take place from late June through the fall of 2023 in order to bring the curb ramps into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

During construction some surrounding sidewalks and driveways will be closed to accommodate the work. Temporary pedestrian access routes will be designated and signs will be in place to guide pedestrians around the construction activities in a safe manner. Businesses whose driveways are to be affected will be directly notified by Caltrans.

There will also be traffic lane closures between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., with no more than one lane in one direction of travel closed at a time. While work may occur at multiple intersections, only one direction of travel at each intersection will be worked on at a time to better accommodate traffic.

The purpose of the new curb ramps and sidewalks are to make it easier for people with disabilities related to mobility to negotiate the intersections.

Every effort will be made to keep noise and disruption to a minimum, but residents and businesses should expect some noise from construction. Parking will be restricted in the work areas, with signs in place to inform motorists of the restrictions.

Caltrans thanks residents and businesses for their patience as we work to bring the curb ramps into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
