Pedestrian/Cyclist Crossing Systems at San Pablo Avenue (SR-123) and Virginia Street, and San Pablo and Hearst Street in Berkeley Go Live April 20, 2023

ALAMEDA COUNTY / BERKELEY ― Pedestrian/cyclist crossing systems at San Pablo Avenue (State Route 123) and Virginia Street, and San Pablo and Hearst Street in Berkeley became operative Thursday, April 20, 2023.

Cyclists and pedestrians wishing to use the intersections can now push a button to activate a flashing beacon that will signal vehicles to stop. This will enhance safety at this intersection where Virginia Street, one of Berkeley’s Bicycle Boulevards, crosses busy San Pablo Avenue, as well as the intersection of San Pablo and Hearst.

The systems use what’s known as a pedestrian hybrid beacon to control traffic. When a cyclist or pedestrian pushes the button, the overhead beacons go into action regulating vehicle traffic.

Caltrans thanks the public for their patience during the installation process.
