Northbound I-680 To Be Closed in Sunol Between Koopman Road and Sunol Boulevard President’s Day Weekend, February 17-21 (RAIN POSTPONES)

Published:

ALAMEDA COUNTY – Interstate 680 will be closed in the northbound direction between Koopman Road and Sunol Boulevard in Sunol on President’s Day weekend, WEATHER PERMITTING.

This closure is scheduled to run from Friday night, February 17 at 10 p.m. through 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, February 21 (four nights, three days). The closure will be rescheduled if it rains. During the closure, crews will work around the clock to reconstruct the roadway to make a smoother ride for motorists.

Caltrans would like to thank residents, businesses and the traveling public for their patience as we work to improve northbound Interstate 680. We monitored traffic during the February 10-13 weekend closure and are making adjustments to cut down delays and inconvenience.

Here are some tips to help make it easier to get where you’re going during the closures:

  • Motorists coming from the South Bay should take I-880/SR-238/I-580 instead of I-680.
  • The heaviest traffic is expected to be on northbound I-680. When traveling anywhere on northbound I-680 between San Jose and Pleasanton, drivers should expect delays of an hour or more and plan accordingly.
  • If at all possible, avoid travel on northbound I-680 this weekend and next, or allow additional travel time to get to your destination.
  • Flaggers will be in place on Paloma Way and Pleasanton-Sunol Road in Sunol to guide drivers quickly through the intersection.
  • Flaggers will also be in place on Castlewood Drive and Pleasanton-Sunol Road.
  • Before leaving on your trip, check the Caltrans QuickMap app on your phone or at https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/.

Future Closure: Weather permitting, the I-680 freeway is also scheduled to be closed in the northbound direction between Sunol Boulevard and Bernal Avenue from 10:00 p.m. Friday to 5:00 a.m. Monday on the following weekend:

  • Friday night, February 24 through early Monday morning, February 27 (three nights, two days)

In the case of rain or unanticipated developments, the closures will be rescheduled and the public will be notified.

During the closures, crews will work around the clock to remove and replace entire sections of the freeway. The work includes repaving the freeway. The work is part of a project encompassing northbound I-680 between Sunol and San Ramon to improve the freeway to enhance safety and provide a smoother ride for motorists.

Southbound I-680 will remain open and will not be affected by the closure. California Highway Patrol officers and message signs will be on hand to guide motorists.
