MARIN COUNTY- Caltrans re-opened the second of two westbound lanes on State Route 37 (SR-37) in Marin County around 1:30 PM on Wednesday, January 18, 2023. The lane had been closed since 5:30 PM, Saturday after Novato Creek overtopped a levy and flooded the highway causing Caltrans to close the highway between Atherton Avenue and Highway 101 in Marin County.

With the highway closed, Caltrans placed six portable pumps on the right lane of westbound SR-37 and began pumping the water back into the creek. By 11:00 AM, Monday, the highway was dry enough to reopen both eastbound lanes and one westbound lane of the highway.

As of late morning today (Wednesday), the creek had receded to the point where pumping was no longer necessary. Upon removal of the pumps, Caltrans reopened the right-hand westbound lane, making the highway fully open for the first time since Saturday afternoon.

Caltrans will monitor the highway, as more rain could fall this evening, and water continues to drain through the Novato Creek watershed. King tides are expected this week, raising the water table and impeding drainage - another reason for vigilance.

Caltrans will update its Twitter page at https://twitter.com/CaltransD4 on the latest highway conditions, and drivers are encouraged to check out Caltrans Quickmap http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/
