Road Was Closed to Accommodate Storm Cleanup and Repairs

ALAMEDA COUNTY – Niles Canyon Road (State Route 84) has REOPENED from Mission Boulevard (State Route 238) in Fremont to Main Street in Sunol. It was closed to accommodate Caltrans crews working to clean up debris on the roadway, clear flooding and repair guardrails.

Map showing the location of State Route 84 in Alameda County.Niles Canyon reopened the afternoon of January 12, 2023. Caltrans crews worked 12-hour shifts so the roadway could open to the public as soon as possible. However, we caution motorists to be alert as they navigate the roadway, as rain and other forces may cause debris to enter the roadway, among other things.

Caltrans crews are working day and night to repair and recover the state-owned areas under our jurisdiction, both in Sunol and throughout the nine Bay Area counties. However, hazardous conditions created by rain and wind may make it necessary to close the road again.

Caltrans recommends that motorists check our Caltrans QuickMap before traveling: http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/. For 24/7 traffic updates, follow 511.org: https://twitter.com/511SFBAY.
