Ramp metering is a traffic management strategy using traffic signals to manage how many vehicles access the freeway at one time. This prevents large numbers of vehicles, commonly known as platoons, from getting on the freeway at the same time and causing congestion. Metering improves the safety of vehicles merging and the flow of traffic on the highway.

During afternoon commute hours, ramp metering helps vehicles maintain optimal travel speeds and improves travel time reliability.
