MARIN COUNTY — Caltrans will begin its roadside vegetation reduction work in October along US-101 south in Mill Valley. This work reflects Caltrans’ partnership with the Southern Marin Fire Department and is part of a state-wide effort to reduce fires throughout California.

There is a scheduled on-ramp closure for E. Blithedale Avenue for US-101 south from Monday, October 31 through Friday, November 4. The work will continue Monday, November 7 through Friday, November 11 as well as Monday, November 14 through Friday, November 18. All times are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The work is scheduled for completion on November 18. Caltrans will work to take any opportunities presented to reduce closure dates and duration as the project progresses.

CMS signs will be on site to let drivers know about the upcoming work.

Take the on-ramp for US-101 south

Caltrans is working with local, regional, and state fire marshals to prioritize areas for vegetation control projects to reduce the ability for a fire to spread quickly.

The work will include mowing, removing low-hanging limbs from trees that assist a fire to climb into the canopy, removing dead and dying trees and thinning dense tree stands. Trimming and removals will be prescribed by a registered professional forester trained in forest fire fuel reduction.

Changeable message and directional signs will be in place to assist motorists traveling in the area. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be on-site during the closures.

Caltrans will perform other vegetation management work later this fall on US-101 northbound and southbound - just north of the Robin Williams Tunnel (Waldo Tunnel) in Sausalito. Specific times and dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

Please drive with caution. Slow for the Cone Zone and Be Work Zone Alert. Caltrans thanks motorists for their patience while we work to maintain our state's highways, bridges, and tunnels.
