Caltrans and Solano County Celebrate Milestone in I-80/I-680/SR-12 Interchange Project

SB 1 provided $53.2 million in funding for this phase of the project

SOLANO COUNTY — Caltrans and the Solano County Transportation Authority (STA) today celebrated the completion of a critical phase in the project to improve the Interstate 80 (I-80), Interstate 680 (I-680), and State Route 12 (SR-12) freeway interchange in Solano County. Funding for the two-year, $93.7 million project includes $53.2 million in funding from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, and $9 million in federal funding.

“The I-80/I-680/SR-12 interchange is an important conduit for the people in the Bay Area,” said Caltrans District 4 Director Dina El-Tawansy. “Completion of this phase of the project will significantly benefit motorists in the Napa Valley, Sacramento, and the greater Bay Area. We look forward to beginning work on the next phase for this vital interchange.”

The I-80/I-680/SR-12 project is a multi-year, multi-phase effort near Fairfield’s Green Valley and Cordelia neighborhoods that includes Package 1 through Package 7. Package 1 was completed in 2017 with a new Green Valley Road Interchange and westbound SR-12 connector from westbound I-80 to westbound SR-12

The just-completed phase of the project, known as “Package 2A,” will improve the flow of traffic through the reconfiguration of three freeway ramps at the interchange. It replaces the existing single-lane eastbound SR-12 to eastbound I-80 connector with a new two-lane connector and bridge structure, constructs a new off-ramp from eastbound SR-12 to Green Valley Road, and creates a new off-ramp from eastbound I-80 to Green Valley Road and southbound I-680. Motorists using this new interchange will enjoy improved travel times and enhanced safety while residents will benefit from reduced cut-through traffic on local streets.

Speakers at today’s celebration include Caltrans District 4 Director Dina El-Tawansy, California State Assemblymember Lori Wilson, Metropolitan Transportation Commission Alfredo Pedroza, and Solano Transportation Authority Board Chair and Vallejo Mayor Robert McConnell.

“The completion of the I-80/I-680/SR12 Package 2A Project will greatly enhance the flow of traffic and improve safety for commuters and freight traffic traveling through this busy interchange,” said McConnell. “Additionally, this project will improve Solano County’s economy by getting workers and goods to their destinations more quickly and more efficiently. We want to thank our partners at the California Transportation Commission, Caltrans, and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission for helping improve the safety for everyone traveling on this vital stretch of the I-80 freight corridor.”

SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation in annual funding shared equally by the state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly thanks to the availability of SB 1 funds.
