Caltrans, Vallejo, and Solano County Celebrate Completion of $40 Million Project that Improves Six Bridges on Interstate 80

SB 1 Provided 95% of the Funding

SOLANO COUNTY — Caltrans, the City of Vallejo, and the Solano County Transportation Authority (STA) today celebrated the completion of the Interstate 80 (I-80) Six Bridges project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring remarks from several distinguished speakers. Funding for the three-year, $40 million project – which was completed three months ahead of schedule – included $38 million in funding from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

To meet federal standards, the I-80 Six Bridges Project raised the vertical clearance to 16 feet, 6 inches of the first six bridges east of the Carquinez Bridge: Magazine Street, Benicia Road, Georgia Street, Springs Road, Tennessee Street, and Redwood Street.

“Finishing this project – and doing so ahead of schedule, before the busy holiday season begins – will help improve the safe and efficient flow of goods along the I-80 freight corridor,” said Caltrans District 4 Director Dina El-Tawansy. “We would like to thank the people and businesses in the city of Vallejo for their patience and understanding during the construction of this important infrastructure improvement project.”

Speakers at today’s celebration included Vallejo Mayor Robert McConnell and Solano Transportation Authority Executive Director Daryl K. Halls.

“The City of Vallejo values and appreciates the expertise brought by Caltrans to such an impactful project, especially the improvement of the pavement surface,” said Vallejo Mayor Robert McConnell. “We look forward to working with Caltrans on future projects to further enhance the freeway and our community.”

Minor construction work remains to be done including the installation of barrier railing, landscaping, irrigation, and lane striping.

SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation in annual funding shared equally between the state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly based on the availability of SB 1 funds.
