On-Ramp Meters to be Activated on Northbound Interstate 101 in Santa Clara County June 15
SANTA CLARA COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) In partnership with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), and the City of Palo Alto, City of Sunnyvale, City of Mountain View, and Santa Clara County are working together to implement ramp metering along the study corridor of US-101. Caltrans will activate ramp meters on northbound Interstate 101 (NB US-101), between Fair Oaks Avenue in the city of Sunnyvale and Embarcadero Road/Oregon Expressway in the city of Palo Alto, Santa Clara County.
Metering lights will be activated beginning June 15,2021. The ramp meters will be operational on weekdays during the AM peak period between 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM and during the PM peak period between 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The following is a list of on-ramp locations:
- Fair Oaks Ave Diagonal On-ramp
- Mathilda Ave Loop On-ramp
- Ellis St Diagonal On-ramp
- Moffett Blvd Loop On-ramp
- SR-85 Diagonal Connector On-ramp
- Shoreline Blvd Collector (Loop and Diagonal) On-ramp
- Rengstorff Ave Diagonal On-ramp
- San Antonio Rd Collector (Loop and Diagonal) On-ramp
- Oregon Expwy/Embarcadero Rd Collector (Loops and Diagonal) On-ramp

What is Ramp Metering?
Ramp metering is a traffic management strategy using traffic signals accompanying equipment and techniques to manage on-ramp flow used to access the freeway system. It is intended to improve the safety of vehicles merging and the flow of traffic on the highway.
The Purpose
The Purpose of ramp metering during AM and PM commute hours is to maintain optimum travel speeds and to improve travel time reliability along NB US-101 by managing the number of vehicles entering the freeway. By limiting the number of vehicles entering the freeway during periods of congestion, freeway speeds and travel time may improve. Metering rates may be adjusted when traffic demand increases in the future.
