Tree Removal On State Route 84 In Niles Canyon
Expected to Conclude in March 2021

ALAMEDA COUNTY—Caltrans is scheduled to begin construction on safety improvements and the Alameda Creek Bridge Improvement Project in March along State Route 84 from Mission Boulevard in Fremont to Interstate 680 in Niles Canyon.

As identified in the approved Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Assessment for each project, trees had to be removed to accommodate construction of the projects. This tree removal began in late November 2020 and is expected to conclude in March, barring unforeseen developments such as rain.

All safety precautions are in place during tree removal, including California Highway Patrol presence and, when necessitated by closures limited to one lane, signs and flaggers are on hand to direct traffic.

The improvements include constructing New Alameda Creek Bridge and Retaining Wall; installing a traffic signal at SR-84 and Main Street in the City of Sunol to relieve traffic congestion and make the intersection safer; installing a traffic signal at Pleasanton Sunol Road and Niles Canyon Road; installation of traffic signs and active warning signs for cyclists.

The improvements were guided, in part, by feedback from the public and will ensure continued operation of the highway and safety of its users.
