UPDATE: Speed Reductions on State Route 84
In Niles Canyon March 2021 Through 2024
For Safety Improvements and Bridge Project

ALAMEDA COUNTY—Caltrans is scheduled to begin construction on safety improvements and the Alameda Creek Bridge Improvement Project in March along State Route 84 from Mission Boulevard in Fremont to Interstate 680 in Niles Canyon.

Speeds along State Route 84 will be reduced by 10 miles per hour from the posted speed limit to accommodate work on the project. Portable speed reduction signs and California Highway Patrol officers will be onsite to remind motorists to slow down.

The work will take place between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Most work will take place during daytime hours. Motorists can expect up to 15 minutes of delay when work is underway. The work is expected to last through 2024, though rain and other unexpected developments may affect the schedule.

The improvements include constructing New Alameda Creek Bridge and Retaining Wall; installing a traffic signal at SR-84 and Main Street in the City of Sunol to relieve traffic congestion and make the intersection safer; installing a traffic signal at Pleasanton Sunol Road and Niles Canyon Road; installation of traffic signs and active warning signs for cyclists.
