Sidewalk and Driveway Closures on Ashby Avenue (SR-13)
For Berkeley Ramp Improvements Through Summer 2021
BERKELEY – Caltrans has scheduled temporary closures of some sidewalks and driveways at 12 intersections along Ashby Avenue (SR-13) in Berkeley. The closures will take place from February 8 through the summer of 2021, in order to bring the curb ramps into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The work will take place at 12 intersections along Ashby Ave. between Domingo Avenue and Shattuck Avenue. Work will generally be performed between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., with intermittent night work.
There will also be traffic lane closures, with one lane in one direction closed at a time. While work will occur at multiple intersections, only a single corner of each intersection will be worked on at a time to better accommodate pedestrian traffic.
The purpose of the new curbs is to make it easier for people with disabilities related to mobility to negotiate the intersections.
Every effort will be made to keep noise and disruption to a minimum, but residents and businesses should expect some noise from construction. Parking will be restricted in the work areas, with signs in place to inform motorists of the restrictions. Some sidewalks will be closed to accommodate the work. Signs will be in place to guide pedestrians to detours. Businesses whose driveways are affected will be directly notified by Caltrans.
