Signals automate one-way traffic control between Fort Ross and Jenner

SONOMA COUNTY – Caltrans has installed temporary traffic signals on State Route 1 near Meyers Grade between Jenner and Fort Ross in northern Sonoma County to replace workers who have been directing one-way control through a work zone. The signals will be activated on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.

Flaggers have been onsite since the Meyers Fire - part of the LNU Complex Fire -swept through the area on September 1, 2020, damaging four retaining walls.

The temporary signals are automated, using pavement sensors and timing mechanisms to optimize traffic movement. Still, the construction zone is over a half-mile long, so motorists should expect five-minute delays.

Also, a push-button installed on the signals will allow additional time for bicyclists.

Caltrans issued an emergency contract to repair the flame-damaged retaining walls after inspectors found significant damage to walls and drainage systems. The retaining walls are located long the ocean side of the highway, keeping the cliffs below the road from sliding.

Work crews are currently repairing three of the four retaining walls, removing burnt timbers, and replacing them with new wood or concrete.  One retaining wall, however, must be replaced.

Caltrans is scheduled to complete the construction of the replacement retaining wall by the end of January 2021, at which time the traffic signals will be removed.
