Oakland - With storms approaching the Bay Area, Caltrans maintenance crews have been assigned 12-hour shifts so they can respond around-the-clock to provide extra staff for roadway emergencies brought on by wet weather.

Caltrans has also been monitoring the storms and working directly with partner agencies as issues arise.

Maintenance Teams have already checked on problem spots such as low lying areas that are prone to flooding. Earlier this week, work crews cleared drains and gutters, removing debris that can quickly plug drains during rainstorms and lead to flooding.

In areas barren of vegetation, for example, places where there have recently been fires, Caltrans crews have implemented erosion control, which will reduce the potential for mudslides. Caltrans advises motorists to slow down when visibility is reduced.

Be mindful of wet road conditions, particularly after a long dry spell when rain loosens the oily residue that has collected in the pavement during the dry months.
