What is Ramp Metering?

Ramp metering is a traffic management strategy using traffic signals accompanying equipment and techniques to manage on-ramp flow used to access the freeway system. It is intended to improve the safety of vehicles merging and the flow of traffic on the highway.

Northbound Morning-Activation

In the first stage ramp meters will be activated during the morning peak hours (6:00 a.m.to 10:30 a.m.) on NB I-880 from The Alameda to Montague Expressway in San Jose. Current metering hours at Stevens Creek Boulevard and Bascom Avenue on-ramps will be extended.

Beginning Tuesday, October 15th, the new on-ramp meters will be set to solid green during commute times alerting drivers to the new driving condition.

On Tuesday, October 22th, ramp meters will cycle through red and green during morning commute hours, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Drivers entering NB I-880 where ramp meters are activated should stop at red and wait until the metering light turns green to enter the freeway. Caltrans will monitor traffic conditions and operate ramp meters as appropriate.

The second stage of ramp meter activation in Santa Clara County, the ramp meters will be activated in the afternoon peak hour (2:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.) on NB I-880 from Stevens Creek Blvd to Montague Expressway in San Jose.
