Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Joint Replacement

Published:

Upper Deck Concrete Pour Complete

The final concrete pour for the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge joint repair project was completed Tuesday morning, July 16. All plates have now been removed from the upper deck of the bridge. Remaining work through the rest of July will include the application of rubber sealant, patching and form removal.

Project Need

Each of the original joints, which date back to the mid- 1950s, has been replaced by a new concrete joint with a rubberized seal designed to shrink and expand with changing temperatures. This will prevent cracking of the surrounding concrete road deck. Next year 30 joints on the lower deck of the bridge will also be replaced in conjunction with a bridge painting contract.Crews finish pouring concrete for the final joint on the upper deck of the RSR Bridge

Thank You, Bay Area Motorists!

Caltrans and the Bay Area Toll Authority thank you for your patience over the past several months. We know this work has been inconvenient and we greatly appreciate your understanding as we performed essential work on this workhorse bridge, which has served the Bay Area for the past 63 years!

What To Expect

• To minimize impacts to commute traffic, the remaining sealant and cleanup work is being performed at night. Expect lane closures most nights from 9 pm to 5 am.
