U.S. Highway 50 Placerville/Camino Pavement Rehabilitation Project

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The proposed project is located in El Dorado County on U.S. Highway 50 (US 50) in and near Placerville from west of Carson Road Overcrossing to west of Still Meadows Road; also at 5 Mile Road in the westbound direction; also near Camino, from 1.1 miles west of Snows Road Undercrossing to east of Ridgeway Drive Undercrossing.

This project proposes to grind and replace existing pavement, upgrade Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) features, upgrade overhead signs and two-post ground-mounted signs, enhance Traffic Management System (TMS) elements; rehabilitate or replace drainage systems, vegetation control under guardrail and pave beyond the gore areas; upgrade median concrete barrier; and construct maintenance vehicle pullouts (MVPs). The project also will construct an acceleration lane with a retaining wall at 5 Mile Road to enhance the safety of merging traffic to westbound US 50 from 5 Mile Road.

PURPOSE:

The project will preserve and extend the service life of the existing pavement by addressing pavement in fair condition, extend the service life of drainage systems that are near the end of their service life, upgrade nonstandard median concrete barriers and guardrails to meet current standards, upgrade TMS elements, and enhance overall safety on US 50 for the traveling public and Caltrans maintenance workers.

NEED:

A total of 29.8 lane miles of existing flexible pavement is projected to be in fair condition by the construction year 2026 as the pavement is expected to further deteriorate in the absence of proper action and rehabilitation. Culvert assessment indicates that multiple culverts are in fair and poor condition, which jeopardizes the stability of the existing roadbed. Drainage systems that are in fair or poor condition require rehabilitation or replacement to restore functionality. Additionally, poor condition overhead signs, two-post ground-mounted signs, lighting, existing guardrails, and existing median concrete barriers need to be upgraded to meet the current standards. Paving areas beyond the gore are needed in multiple locations and areas for MVPs (Maintenance Vehicle Pullouts) are needed to provide adequate parking or ingress/egress for Caltrans maintenance vehicles.

Funding:

This project is programmed into the 2022 SHOPP and will be funded with the

20.XX.201.121 program.
