State Route 191 Durham Pentz Intersection Improvements

Project Overview

Caltrans is proposing safety improvements at the intersection of State Route 191 (SR 191) and Durham Pentz Road, located about 0.2 miles south to 0.2 miles north of the intersection near Paradise in Butte County. The project will construct a modern roundabout to improve safety and traffic flow.

Purpose and Need

The purpose of this project is to improve safety and reduce collisions at the SR 191/Durham Pentz Road intersection.
Between January 2017 and December 2021, the intersection experienced 21 collisions, including five injury crashes and one serious injury. Current collision rates are higher than average for similar intersections statewide. Following the Camp Fire, the four-way stop was replaced with a temporary painted roundabout as an emergency measure. This temporary roundabout does not meet current design standards. Observations show many drivers disregard the intended circular flow, creating unsafe conditions. A permanent roundabout will address these safety issues and bring the intersection up to modern standards.

Funding
The project is programmed in the 2024 State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) under the Safety Improvement Program (20.XX.201.010).
