Project Benefits:
As outlined in the 2020-2024 Caltrans Strategic Plan and the 2022 Director’s Policy on Road Safety (DP-36), Caltrans has embraced a Vision Zero Goal (VZG), aiming to achieve zero deaths or serious injuries as part of the 2023 Caltrans Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP). The SHSP was developed in collaboration with a wide range of traffic safety stakeholders across the state including federal, tribal, state, and local representatives.

Purpose:
The purpose of this proposed project is to improve user safety at the interchange and reduce the number of collisions.

Need:
The District 3 Traffic Safety team has determined that vehicles entering Interstate 5 (I-5) from Twin Cities Road on-ramps do not have sufficient acceleration lengths. This has resulted in vehicles entering the mainline at lower speeds, causing a pattern of rear end and sideswipe collisions. Installing acceleration lanes at the interchange will help alleviate the issue by increasing the time to safely merge.

Funding:
This project was programmed in the 2024 State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) and funded from 20.XX.201.010 Safety Improvements Program.

Cost Estimate:

Support  $5,330,000
Capital   $6,860,000
Total  $12,190,000
