Interstate 80 Drum Forebay Drainage Restoration

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

In Placer and Nevada Counties on Interstate 80 near Emigrant Gap, from 0.3 mile east of Drum Forebay Overcrossing to 0.2 mile east of Troy Road Undercrossing. Rehabilitate drainage systems, upgrade Transportation Management System (TMS) elements, and construct Maintenance Vehicle Pullouts (MVPs).

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this project is to rehabilitate and replace existing drainage systems to improve their functionality. This will help preserve the existing roadbed and help prevent flooding within the project vicinity. This project will also improve the existing condition of TMS elements and electrical systems within the project limits. For the protection and safety of Caltrans’ maintenance staff and to provide easy access to these electrical systems for maintenance, MVPs will be constructed at several of the proposed electrical system locations.

NEED:

Culvert assessment indicates that multiple culverts are in fair to critically poor condition, which impacts the quality and integrity of the existing roadway and may cause flooding near the roadway. Drainage systems in fair to critically poor condition require rehabilitation or replacement to restore functionality. Traffic Operations and Maintenance have identified multiple existing TMS elements and electrical systems that require upgrades to current standards. In addition, many of the proposed locations for electrical systems do not provide a safe place for maintenance staff to park their vehicles. MVPs are needed to address these safety issues while allowing full access to the maintenance vehicles and to the electrical equipment being maintained.
