PURPOSE AND NEED:

Purpose:

The purpose of this project is to address the existing fish passage barrier, improve terrestrial wildlife connectivity, repair scour downstream of the bridge within the right of way, and improve safety. The project also proposes improving pedestrian and bicycle facilities by bringing them up to current standards.

Need:

The existing Meeks Creek channel below the bridge is currently a barrier to fish passage due to a vertical drop caused by channel incision. The bridge creates a hydraulic bottleneck that causes backwater in the meadow and accelerated erosive flows downstream. The bridge railings are in poor condition and there is significant scour damage. The roadway lacks pedestrian and bicycle facilities connecting to nearby trails and campgrounds.

Scope of Work:

  • Structure: Replace existing Meeks Creek box culverts with a single-span bridge.
  • Channel: Remove fish passage barrier and restore the Meeks Creek channel.
  • Pavement: Place embankment, pavement, and striping as needed.
  • Safety: Install Class II bicycle lanes with markings and sidewalks.

This project is programmed in the SHOPP and funded in the 20.XX.201.999 Sustainability and Miscellaneous Program.
