El Dorado U.S. Highway 50 Pavement Rehabilitation Project
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
On U.S. Highway 50 in El Dorado County, near Pollock Pines, Kyburz, and Strawberry, from west of Icehouse Road to 0.5 miles east of Strawberry. Rehabilitate pavement and drainage systems, and upgrade lighting and guardrail.
PROJECT LOCATION MAP:
PURPOSE AND NEED:
Purpose:
The purpose of this project is to improve the quality of the existing pavement and improve drainage systems by replacing or rehabilitating systems in fair and poor condition. This project will also replace existing roadway lighting and upgrade existing two-post signs and guardrail to current standards.
In addition, this project proposes to harden infrastructure to account for natural disasters related to climate change. This will be achieved by replacing fire-vulnerable culvert and guardrail materials with more fire-resistant concrete and steel materials.
Need:
This project is needed to address the condition of the pavement within the project limits. A total of 42.7 lane miles of existing flexible pavement within the project limits is projected to be in fair condition by the 2025 construction year, and is expected to further deteriorate in the absence of proper pavement maintenance.
Culvert assessments for this project indicate that multiple culverts are in fair and poor condition, impacting the quality of the existing roadway pavement. Drainage systems in fair or poor condition require rehabilitation and replacement to restore functionality.
Additionally, nonstandard guardrails, two-post ground-mounted signs, roadway lighting, and one overhead sign need to be upgraded to meet current standards.
FUNDING:
This project is programmed in the 2025 SHOPP and has been funded in the 20.XX.201.121 Pavement Preservation Program.
