Interstate 80 Construction Update for Sierra Corridor

Placer/Nevada Counties – Caltrans is reminding motorists of various lane and ramp closures in multiple locations along Interstate 80 (I-80) as several projects continue in Placer and Nevada counties. 
 
Motorists will experience delays with each project. If traveling across the entire corridor, the cumulative delay may reach up to two hours depending on traffic volumes. Caltrans encourages motorists to factor in additional travel times along the I-80 Sierra corridor and check QuickMap for real-time roadway information.
 
No lane closures are scheduled over the Labor Day holiday weekend, but construction will resume Tuesday, September 8. Here is the breakdown for next week in geographical order:
 
Eastbound I-80
  • Blue Canyon Pavement Rehabilitation Project between Applegate and Weimar, various lane and ramp closures are scheduled from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday, September 8 through Thursday, September 10. Work is also scheduled from 10 p.m. Friday, September 11 to 7 a.m. Saturday, September 12.
  • Alta Pavement Improvement Project between Colfax and Gold Run, various lane and ramp closures are scheduled from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 9 and Thursday, September 10. Work is also scheduled from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, September 11.
  • Monte Vista Pavement Rehabilitation Project
    • Crystal Springs on- and off-ramps are closed until further notice. Motorists will detour eastbound to Baxter and return westbound on I-80 to Crystal Springs.
    • Drum Forebay on- and off-ramps are closed until further notice. Motorists will detour eastbound to the next available exit and return westbound on I-80 to Drum Forebay.
  • Blue Canyon Pavement Rehabilitation Project
    • Between the Whitmore Maintenance Station and Emigrant Gap, various lane closures are scheduled from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday, September 8 through Thursday, September 10. Work is also scheduled from 10 p.m. Friday, September 11 to 7 a.m. Saturday, September 12.
    • Blue Canyon Road is scheduled to be closed from 11 p.m. Wednesday, September 9 to 4 a.m. Thursday, September 10.

  • Yuba Pass Separation Overhead Bridge Project
    • Between Yuba Gap and Eagle Lakes Road, various lane closures are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, September 9.
    • Eastbound I-80 off-ramp to State Route 20 (SR 20) is scheduled to be closed from 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 8 to 6 a.m. Sunday, September 13. Motorists will detour along eastbound I-80 to Eagle Lakes Road, then head back westbound on I-80 and take the off-ramp to westbound SR 20.
  • Soda Springs Pavement Rehabilitation Project between Troy and Soda Springs, various lane and ramp closures are scheduled from 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 8 to noon Friday, September 11 and from 6 p.m. Friday, September 11 to 6 a.m. Saturday, September 12.
Westbound I-80
  • Emergency Culvert/Rockfall Project between Floriston and Hinton Road, various lane closures are scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11.
  • Soda Springs Pavement Rehabilitation Project between Soda Springs and Troy, various lane and ramp closures are scheduled from 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 8 to 6 a.m. Saturday, September 12.
  • Yuba Pass Separation Overhead Bridge Project
    • Between Eagle Lakes Road and Yuba Gap, various lane closures are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, September 9.
    • Westbound I-80 off-ramp at Yuba Gap is closed until further notice due to the crossover in place. Motorists will detour westbound to the Emigrant Gap exit and return eastbound on I-80 to Yuba Gap.

  • Alta Pavement Improvement Project between Monte Vista/Dutch Flat and Colfax, various lane closures are scheduled from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 9 and Thursday, September 10.
  • I-80 Middle-Mile Broadband Network (MMBN) Project between Magra and Colfax, various lane and ramp closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, September 8 through Friday, September 11. Lane closures are scheduled to end for the week at 5 a.m. Saturday, September 12.
  • Blue Canyon Pavement Rehabilitation Project between Weimar and Applegate, various lane and ramp closures are scheduled from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday, September 8 through Friday, September 11. Lane closures are scheduled to end for the week at 7 a.m. Saturday, September 12.
  • I-80 MMBN Project between Applegate and Dry Creek Road, various lane and ramp closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, September 8 through Friday, September 11. Lane closures are scheduled to end for the week at 5 a.m. Saturday, September 12. 

The extended lane closures will help minimize the duration of construction and improve worker safety. The schedule is subject to change or be delayed due to weather, availability of materials or other unexpected events.

Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
