Maxwell Rest Area Closed for Emergency Repairs on Interstate 5
Willows Rest Area Remains Open
COLUSA COUNTY – Caltrans has closed the Maxwell Rest Area off Interstate 5 due to failed critical water and wastewater control systems. This closure is necessary to protect public health and comply with environmental regulations.
The well and sewer lift station systems at Maxwell have failed, preventing safe operation. Replacement equipment has been ordered and is expected to arrive in approximately 6 to 11 weeks. Repairs will begin once the equipment is delivered.
The Willows Rest Area remains open; however, its wastewater monitoring system has failed and relies on similar equipment. Caltrans is closely monitoring conditions in case repairs become necessary.
These emergency repairs focus on restoring the electrical and control systems that manage water supply, wastewater flow, and monitoring—essential for safe rest area operations. A separate, planned construction project scheduled for later this year at Maxwell does not include these emergency repairs.
The $22.4 million planned project will modernize the rest area infrastructure, extending its operational lifecycle and upgrading comfort station facilities to meet future traffic demands. It will not address the emergency water and wastewater system repairs causing the current closure.
Caltrans will provide updates as more information becomes available and once a reopening timeline is confirmed.
Caltrans District 3 maintains 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Drivers are reminded to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews.
