Sacramento -- Caltrans is advising motorists of maintenance work scheduled on northbound Interstate 5 (I-5) near the Sacramento International Airport (SMF) next week. One northbound lane will remain open.
Caltrans workers will be on the mainline for two day shifts to complete crack sealing work between Powerline Road and the Sacramento River Bridge next week.
Schedule:
9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 2
9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 3

Motorists should leave earlier to reach their destinations, especially to arrive on time to check into the airport. Caltrans recommends motorists add at least 30 minutes of additional travel time.
Due to the limited width of the highway to allow for equipment access and for the safety of Caltrans crews to be able to promptly complete these surface repairs, Caltrans reminds motorists that the work zone speed is lowered to 55 mph and to expect potential stop-and-go traffic. The California Highway Patrol will be onsite to ensure safety for workers and motorists.
The schedule is subject to change due to weather, equipment and/or material availability, or other unexpected events. Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
The department will issue construction updates on X @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3. For real-time traffic, click on Caltrans’ QuickMap or download the QuickMap app from the App Store or Google Play.
