Placer County – Caltrans is alerting motorists about the next extended lane reduction scheduled along State Route 49 (SR 49) at Lone Star Road as construction continues on a $38 million safety barrier and roundabout project.

Crews will reduce northbound and southbound SR 49 to one lane in each direction starting at 6 a.m. Friday, September 5.

One-way reversing traffic control with a pilot car is scheduled overnights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday, September 5 through Sunday, September 7. The intersection is scheduled to return to normal operations with the new roundabout configuration in place by 3 p.m. Monday, September 8.

Only right-hand turns from Lone Star Road onto SR 49 will be allowed during this time. Left-hand turns onto Lone Star Road from SR 49 will be prohibited. Motorists will detour northbound or southbound to the next legal U-turn as needed.

Motorists may experience delays between 15 and 20 minutes, or more depending on traffic volumes. Passenger vehicles heading southbound from Nevada County are encouraged to consider State Route 174 as a possible alternate route.

The extended lane reductions are necessary to allow room for crews to continue working safely on the new roundabout. The final extended lane reduction at Lone Star Road is scheduled for Friday, September 12 through Monday, September 15.

The schedule is subject to change or be delayed due to weather, availability of materials or other unexpected events. The California Highway Patrol will be present for traffic enforcement and motorists are reminded that traffic fines are doubled in construction zones. The work zone speed limit has been reduced to 45 mph 24/7 for the safety of workers and the traveling public. The speed limit within the roundabout at Lorenson Road/Florence Lane is 30 mph.

DeSilva Gates Construction of Dublin is the prime contractor. The project is expected to be completed by fall of this year. At that time, the 1.3-mile stretch along SR 49 will include a concrete median barrier and roundabouts at the Lorenson Road/Florence Lane and Lone Star Road intersections. Additional work will include new pavement, striping, curb and gutters, sidewalks, lighting and signage.

Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
