Placer County – Caltrans is alerting motorists about an upcoming extended lane reduction along State Route 49 (SR 49) at Lorenson Road/Florence Lane this weekend as construction continues on a $38 million safety barrier and roundabout project.

Crews will reduce northbound and southbound SR 49 to one lane in each direction starting at 6 a.m. Friday. Northbound SR 49 is scheduled to reopen to two lanes by 3 p.m. Monday, August 25. Southbound SR 49 is scheduled to reopen to two lanes by 6 a.m. Tuesday, August 26.

Motorists may experience delays between 15 and 20 minutes, or more depending on traffic volumes. Passenger vehicles heading southbound from Nevada County are encouraged to consider State Route 174 as a possible alternate route.

Movement around the roundabout will be limited at various times and only allow right-hand turns onto SR 49. Motorists will need to detour northbound or southbound to the next legal U-turn as needed.

The extended lane reduction is necessary to allow room for construction of the center island of the roundabout and allow time for the concrete to cure. Additional lane reductions are scheduled in September, after the Labor Day holiday weekend, at the intersection of Lone Star Road for construction of the second roundabout.

The schedule is subject to change or be delayed due to weather, availability of materials or other unexpected events. The California Highway Patrol will be present for traffic enforcement and motorists are reminded that traffic fines are doubled in construction zones. The work zone speed limit has been reduced to 45 mph 24/7 for the safety of workers and the traveling public. The speed limit within the roundabout at Lorenson Road/Florence Lane is 30 mph.

DeSilva Gates Construction of Dublin is the prime contractor. The project is expected to be completed by fall of this year. At that time, the 1.3-mile stretch along SR 49 will include a concrete median barrier and roundabouts at the Lorenson Road/Florence Lane and Lone Star Road intersections. Additional work will include new pavement, striping, curb and gutters, sidewalks, lighting and signage.

Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
