Placer County – Caltrans is alerting motorists about upcoming extended lane reductions and intersection closure along State Route 49 (SR 49) at Lorenson Road/Florence Lane this weekend as construction continues on a $38 million safety barrier and roundabout project.
Crews will reduce northbound and southbound SR 49 to one lane in each direction from 5 a.m. Friday, August 1 through 6 a.m. Monday, August 4. After the extended lane reductions, northbound and southbound lanes will be in their final configuration for the roundabout.
Florence Lane will also be closed at the intersection with SR 49during this time. Motorists will detour via Dry Creek Road using Blue Grass Drive, Moss Rock Drive, Virginia Drive and Helen Lane.
During this time:
- Only right-hand turns onto SR 49 will be allowed.
- Left-hand turns from SR 49 will be prohibited within the work area.
- Motorists will detour northbound or southbound to the next legal U-turn as needed.
Additional lane reductions are scheduled late August at the intersection of Lorenson Road/Florence Lane and in September at the intersection of Lone Star Road.
The extended lane reductions are necessary to allow room for crews to continue working safely on the new roundabout. Motorists may experience delays between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on traffic volumes.
The schedule is subject to change or be delayed due to weather, availability of materials or other unexpected events. The work zone speed limit has been reduced to 45 mph 24/7 for the safety of workers and the traveling public. The California Highway Patrol will be present for traffic enforcement and motorists are reminded that traffic fines are doubled in construction zones.
DeSilva Gates Construction of Dublin is the prime contractor. The project is expected to be completed by fall of this year. At that time, the 1.3-mile stretch along SR 49 will include a concrete median barrier and roundabouts at the Lorenson Road/Florence Lane and Lone Star Road intersections. Additional work will include new pavement, striping, curb gutters, sidewalks, lighting and signage.
Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
