Rio Vista - Caltrans is advising motorists of the another full weekend closure on the $27.2 million Rio Vista Bridge (Helen Madere Memorial Bridge) Rehabilitation Project on State Route 12 (SR 12) for the lift deck replacement work that began in March.

The weekend bridge closure is scheduled to be in place at 9 p.m. (see schedule and detour map). Motorists should allow for extra travel time to reach their destinations, especially for scheduled appointments and work schedules.

This project has required multiple weekend closures for the work to be completed due to the limited width of the bridge to allow for heavy equipment access and for the safety of the contractor and Caltrans workers.

The weekend bridge closures have reduced the total project workdays and helped avoid long wait times at peak commute hours. Motorists could encounter additional travel times of up to two hours using detours from Rio Vista to Sacramento County on SR 12 across the Sacramento River.

There will be additional intermittent lane closures to complete the project, which is expected in spring 2026.

Weekend Closure Dates:

  • 9 p.m. Friday, June 20 through 5 a.m. Monday, June 23.

The schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment or material availability, or other unexpected events. Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.

The department will issue construction updates on X @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3. For real-time traffic, click on Caltrans’ QuickMap or download the QuickMap app from the App Store or Google Play.
