Placer County - Caltrans is advising motorists of various lane closures due to the broadband installation project that is continuing for the 2025 season on State Route 28 (SR 28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.

The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed internet into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.

Utility work is scheduled at the following locations and times:

  • Along eastbound SR 28 Wednesday, May 28 and Thursday, May 29 from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. between Laurel Drive in Tahoe Vista and the State Route 267 junction in Kings Beach. Work is also scheduled Friday, May 30 from 6 a.m. until noon.
  • Along both directions of SR 28 Wednesday, May 28 and Thursday, May 29 from 6 a.m. until midnight between Tahoe State Park and Estates Drive in Tahoe Vista. Work is also scheduled Friday, May 30 from midnight until noon.

Please note that crews will be shifting around to various sections throughout the week with one-way traffic control in effect when necessary.

Motorists could encounter total delays up to 15 minutes between Tahoe City and Kings Beach on SR 28. Please allow for extra time to reach your destination, especially during school drop-off and pick-up times.

Caltrans’ $31.7 million SR 28 Pavement Rehabilitation Project is scheduled to begin in Tahoe City on Monday, June 2. Specific lane closures will be announced in next week’s traffic alert. Mercer-Fraser Company of Eureka is the prime contractor for this project, which is scheduled to be complete in 2026.

All work on road construction projects will be suspended on weekends and holidays including Memorial Day (Monday, May 26). Schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment or material availability, or other unexpected events.

Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow down in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.

Caltrans issues construction and road condition updates on X @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3.  For real-time traffic information, click on Caltrans’ QuickMap quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ or download the QuickMap app from the App Store or Google Play.
