Placer County - Caltrans is advising motorists of various lane closures due to the broadband installation project that is ramping back up for the 2025 season on State Route 28 (SR 28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.

The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed internet into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.

Utility work is scheduled along SR 28 at the following locations and times:

  • Monday, May 5 through Wednesday, May 7 from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. between Center Street in Carnelian Bay and East Agatam Avenue in Tahoe Vista.
  • Thursday, May 8 from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. between Center Street in Carnelian Bay and Anderson Road in Tahoe Vista.
  • Friday, May 9 from 6 a.m. until Noon between Laurel Drive and Brassie Avenue in Tahoe Vista.

Motorists could encounter total delays up to 15 minutes between Carnelian Bay and Kings Beach on SR 28. Please allow for extra time to reach your destination, especially during school drop-off and pick-up times.

The SR 28 Pavement Rehabilitation Project is scheduled to begin in Tahoe City on Monday, May 19. Specific lane closures will be announced the week prior.

The State Route 89 (SR 89) broadband installation project is beginning next week in Christmas Valley in El Dorado County. Crews will be working along SR 89 and U.S. Highway 50 moving north towards Emerald Bay through this fall before continuing along the west shore ending in Tahoe City in fall 2026. Motorists could encounter total delays up to 15 minutes in the Christmas Valley area next week.

All work on road construction projects will be suspended on weekends and holidays. Schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment or material availability, or other unexpected events.
