One-Way Traffic Control on State Route 162 at New Bridge Deck
Storm Damage and Debris Accumulation Prompts Closure of Old Bridge
GLENN COUNTY -- Caltrans closed the old Butte City Bridge over the weekend as a safety precaution and shifted traffic to the new bridge under one-way traffic control. There are no plans to reopen the old bridge.
The newly constructed bridge has been opened with one-way traffic control in place 24 hours a day. Traffic control is necessary while crews complete the construction of asphalt bridge approach slabs and tie-ins to the existing State Route 162 (SR 162). The asphalt and conform work are scheduled to begin this week.
To help protect the integrity of the old Butte City bridge, Caltrans and its contractor have been removing accumulated river debris caused by recent storms and rising water levels in the Sacramento River. During structural monitoring of the old bridge, movement was detected in its existing pier foundations, resulting in the decision to close it.
The department continues to monitor the old bridge for movement and regularly assesses its condition as needed. The old Butte City Bridge is scheduled for demolition during the upcoming construction season.
Construction on the $114 million bridge replacement project started in 2022 and is scheduled to be completed in 2026. Caltrans remains committed to ensuring public safety and will continue monitoring of the area. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the construction zone and to follow all posted signs and traffic-control measures.
Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements. The department will issue updates on X @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3.
