BUTTE COUNTY - Caltrans is notifying motorists that State Route 162 at the Butte City Bridge is closed to public traffic due to structural concerns caused by recent storm-related damage and debris accumulation.
Significant debris buildup accumulated from the storms, with assessments that debris piles have reached up to 5 feet above the water level. The foundation of the existing bridge remains a concern due to exposed piles, and Caltrans is actively monitoring the bridge’s stability.
Emergency vehicles will be allowed to cross the newly constructed bridge, but public traffic is now restricted as the new bridge approaches are not complete. Construction crews are evaluating temporary access solutions, but those are contingent on improved weather conditions.
- Northbound travelers should use State Route 32 as a detour, approximately 70 miles to connect to State Route 99.
- Southbound travelers should use State Route 20 as a detour, approximately 80 miles to connect to State Route 99.
Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
