FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sacramento - Caltrans celebrated the completion of a $39 million project that improves safety, enhances mobility and encourages carpooling on Interstate 5 (I-5) in Sacramento, the first phase of a larger plan for the corridor.

Caltrans held a ribbon-cutting event Tuesday with its local partners to recognize the importance of the project and vision for the corridor.

“This Sacramento I-5 Auxiliary Lanes Project is the first step to improve this corridor for improved safety, reliability and overall traffic flow from downtown Sacramento to the Sacramento International Airport,” said Caltrans District 3 Director Sergio Aceves. “State and federal government investments are giving Caltrans and our partners the funding we need to improve our transportation network.”

The project constructed auxiliary lanes in both directions on I-5 in Natomas from just south of Arena Boulevard to just north of the airport, providing safer merging from on- and off-ramps and allowing motorists to exit the highway sooner to improve traffic flow and enhance safety. Other improvements included adding ramp metering, enhanced Intelligent Transportation System infrastructure and new signage.

The project included $37 million in funding from Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. SB 1 invests $5.4 billion annually to fix roads, freeways and bridges in communities across California and puts more dollars toward transit and safety. Funds are split equally between state and local agencies.

DeSilva Gates Construction of Dublin is the prime contractor on the project.

Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. The department will issue updates on X @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3.
