Lane Closures at the American River Bridge Rehabilitation Project

Sacramento - Caltrans is announcing motorists of a 55-hour weekend lane closure at the American River Bridge Rehabilitation Project in Sacramento. The weekend of October 18, both directions of State Route 51/Capital City Freeway will be reduced to two lanes during the duration of the closure. During overnight hours, SR-51 southbound will only have one lane open.
 
This closure is needed to perform drainage work leading into the Elvas pump station. This work part of the $285.1 million multiyear budget to rehabilitate the bridge deck, install sheet piles around piers for reinforcement, and add a Class I bike path to connect to the existing American River bike path for increased mobility.
Scheduled Closure And Location:
  • Friday, October 18 at 10 p.m. to Monday, October 21 at 5 a.m.
  • Northbound SR-51 and southbound SR-51
  • From Arden Way to E Street, both directions.

Motorists traveling through the work zone should be aware of commercial work vehicles traveling in and out of the area. The work zone speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph and the California Highway Patrol will be present for traffic enforcement.

American river bridge rehab project closure October 18-21

The project includes $239.2 million in funding from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA); $41.8 million from Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017; and $4.1 million from other state funds.

SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation funding annually that is shared about equally between the state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly based on the availability of SB 1 funds, including projects that are partially funded by SB 1. Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.

Work is scheduled to begin as listed but subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/ or materials, and construction related issues.
