Sacramento - Major highway construction is continuing for a $24.8 million pavement repair project and $37.7 million project that is adding transition lanes on Interstate 5 (I-5) in the Natomas area of Sacramento that will require daytime and nighttime lane closures again this weekend.
A full southbound closure of I-5 at the I-80 interchange is scheduled from midnight Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday and midnight Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday to take down an overhead sign structure and install the new sign.
Southbound I-5 at the I-80 interchange will be reduced to two lanes from 10 p.m. Sunday until 5 a.m. Monday. A reduction to one lane is possible between midnight to 5 a.m.
Northbound I-5 at the I-80 interchange will be reduced to two lanes from 8 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. A reduction to one lane is possible between midnight to 5 a.m.
The northbound I-5 connector ramp to westbound I-80 and the eastbound I-80 connector ramp to northbound I-5 will be closed during the following times this weekend:
- 10 p.m. Friday - 10 a.m Saturday
- 10 p.m. Saturday - 10 a.m. Sunday
- 10 p.m. Sunday – 5 a.m. Monday
Detour:
- From southbound I-5 full closure: Take Arena Boulevard (EXIT 524) stay left onto EB Arena Blvd, make right onto SB Truxel Road, stay right and take San Francisco 80 West on-ramp, stay right and take Los Angeles I-5 South Connector ramp (EXIT 86).
- From eastbound I-80 to northbound I-5: Stay on eastbound I-80 and exit at Truxel Road. Make a left onto Truxel Road, move over to the right lane and take the onramp to westbound I-80. Take the northbound I-5 connector towards Redding.
Motorists and airport employees scheduled for flights out of Sacramento International Airport (SMF) should leave at least 40 minutes earlier than the recommended time to be on time for flights and work shifts.
Motorists are encouraged to use an alternate route around the construction work zone. Motorists choosing to use I-5 during the partial closures should expect delays and plan for additional travel times. Some locations will be reduced to 1-2 lanes.
Motorists should be aware of commercial work vehicles traveling in and out of the area that will cause traffic slowdowns.
The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph through the construction zone 24/7. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers will be patrolling the project site ticketing motorists who are not adhering to the posted speed limit signs. The closures and speed limit reductions are necessary for the safety of motorists and workers. Please “Be Work Zone Alert!”
Work is scheduled to begin as listed but subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather conditions, availability of equipment and/or materials, and construction-related issues. The extended lane closures will help to minimize the duration of the work and improve workers’ safety.
The pavement repair project limits are from 0.2 miles south of the American River Bridge to Arena Boulevard. Granite Construction is the prime contractor. Work limits on the transition lanes project are from Arena Boulevard to the Sacramento River Bridge. De Silva Gates is the prime contractor.
Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
