Interstate 5 Repair Work Continues in Sacramento
Northbound and Southbound 55-hour Weekend Roadwork in Natomas Area
SACRAMENTO — Major highway construction is continuing for a $24.8 million pavement repair project that will require daytime and nighttime lane closures on Interstate 5 (I-5) just north of downtown Sacramento again this weekend.
The work includes six 55-hour partial weekend closures and closures to connector ramps to Interstate 80 (I-80). The project is expected to be completed by October. This weekend is the second of the six scheduled weekends of work.
The project limits are from 0.2 miles south of the American River Bridge to Arena Boulevard in Natomas. Granite Construction is the contractor.
Southbound I-5 at Garden Highway will be reduced to two lanes from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. A reduction to one lane is possible between midnight to 5 a.m.
Northbound I-5 at the I-80 interchange will be reduced to two lanes from 8 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. A reduction to one lane is possible between midnight to 5 a.m.
The northbound I-5 connector ramp to westbound I-80 and the eastbound I-80 connector ramp to northbound I-5 will be closed during the following times this weekend:
• 8 p.m. Friday - 8 a.m Saturday
• 10 p.m. Saturday - 10 a.m. Sunday
• 10 p.m. Sunday – 5 a.m. Monday
DETOUR:
• From northbound I-5 to westbound I-80:
Take the eastbound I-80 connector, stay in the right lane and exit I-80 at Truxel Road. Make a left onto Truxel Road, move over to the right lane and take the onramp to westbound I-80.
• From eastbound I-80 to northbound I-5:
Stay on eastbound I-80 and exit at Truxel Road. Make a left onto Truxel Road, move over to the right lane and take the onramp to westbound I-80. Take the northbound I-5 connector towards Redding.
Motorists and airport employees scheduled for flights out of Sacramento International Airport (SMF) should leave at least 40 minutes earlier than the recommended time to be on time for flights and work shifts.
Motorists are encouraged to use an alternate route around the construction work zone. Motorists choosing to use I-5 during the partial closures should expect delays and plan for additional travel times. Some locations will be reduced to 1-2 lanes.
Motorists should be aware of commercial work vehicles traveling in and out of the area that will cause traffic slowdowns.
The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph through the construction zone 24/7. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be patrolling the project site ticketing motorists who are not adhering to the posted speed limit signs. The closures and speed-limit reductions are necessary for the safety of motorists and workers. Please “Be Work Zone Alert!”
Nearby residents can expect loud construction and commercial truck back-up beeping noises during day and nighttime hours.
Work is scheduled to begin as listed but subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather conditions, availability of equipment and/or materials, and construction-related issues. The extended lane closures will help to minimize the duration of the work and improve workers’ safety.
Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
