FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Placer County – Caltrans is advising motorists that Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, have suspended work for the winter months on a gas line replacement project on State Route 28 (SR-28) between Tahoe City and Kings Beach.

Construction to replace this pipeline and the associated distribution lines in this area has been ongoing since 2021. Approximately 5.6 miles of mainline installation has now been completed.  Of the 5.6 miles of mainline installed, only a handful of services are still outstanding to be installed.  The sections of SR-28 shaded in blue in the image on the right are the sections of mainline that have been completed.

For 2024, the first priority for crews will be to complete work on the section of SR-28 near Old County Road and Ridgewood Road in Carnelian Bay to close the gap of approximately 1,000 feet between newly installed main pipeline. After this section is finished, crews will shift to the segment near Old County Road. This segment is around 5,500 feet in total length and ends just east of Old Mill Road. Service crews will follow behind the mainline crew completing service tie overs and service replacement work, just as was done during the 2023 construction season. The two segments of the proposed 2024 construction season work are shaded green in the image below:

Southwest Gas is anticipated to continue pipeline work in the 2025 construction season in Kings Beach near the State Route 28/267 intersection, and up SR-267 to Speckled Avenue.  This segment is roughly 2,400 feet in length.  More information will be released on this effort as it becomes available.
