FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nevada County – Caltrans is alerting motorists of upcoming lane closures and delays at several locations along Interstate 80 (I-80) between Colfax and the Nevada state line in Placer, Nevada, and Sierra counties.

Caltrans performed an extensive field review of the I-80 corridor earlier this year and found an unprecedented amount of damage. Several areas were identified as needing immediate repair and would not hold up through another winter season. Five emergency contracts were executed for the repair work, totaling $84.4 million. Primary contractors include Teichert, Vanguard Construction, Dees Burke Engineering Constructors, Granite Construction and Q&D Construction.

Starting at 10 a.m. Monday, August 28 crews will begin pavement repairs at Location 5, in the Boca area through the Donner Pass Inspection Facility. Construction will prepare the area for pavement slab replacement and polyester concrete inlay. Additional striping and drainage work will also take place. Motorists will experience lane closures during the daytime hours through Friday, September 1 with delays around 10 to 15 minutes.

Additional closures are expected along Location 1, 2, and 3 after the Labor Day holiday weekend. Work will begin along Location 4 on Tuesday, September 5. Several areas along the I-80 corridor exhibit moderate to high levels of rutting due to chain wear over the winter and spring seasons. Once fully underway, repairs at all 5 locations will occur at the same time with a maximum delay up to 2 hours. Portable message signs will be in place at key locations to inform motorists of the extended lane closures. Fixed changeable message signs are also in place to notify motorists and direct regional traffic to use alternate routes around the work zone.

The extended lane closures will help to minimize the duration of the project, speeding completion and improve worker’s safety. The climate in the area also provides a limited temperature window to perform the needed repairs.

The schedule is subject to change or delays due to weather, availability of materials or other unexpected events.

Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
