FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Butte County— To help relieve congestion and make merging safer for motorists, Caltrans will activate three ramp meters on northbound State Highway 99 in Chico this month.

The meters are scheduled to go live on Monday, November 14. Motorists should be aware that metering hours will vary and may take place any time of day, even during non-commute hours and on weekends and holidays. Metering lights are activated as traffic starts to build up on the freeway.

To help alert the public of the changes, the meters are set to rest in green beginning November 7 before going live on November 14. The new ramp meters on Highway 99 are at the following locations:

  • East 20th Street on-ramp to northbound Highway 99
  • Eastbound Skyway loop on-ramp to northbound Highway 99
  • Westbound Skyway slip on-ramp to northbound Highway 99

Caltrans has been operating anytime, on-demand traffic metering for freeway on-ramps in the greater Sacramento Valley region since 2019. Studies have found ramp meters are an effective way to reduce freeway congestion and collisions, improve travel time and make merging onto the freeway safer.

Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties.
