Elk Grove — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is offering a free Dump Day for residents and visitors to the area on Saturday, May 14 at its maintenance station in Elk Grove. This event is organized to further Caltrans’ goal of keeping California highways litter-free as part of the Clean California Initiative.
Caltrans will have staff on site from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to accept household waste and approved debris at no charge at the Elk Grove Maintenance Station located at 9087 Elkmont Drive, Elk Grove, CA 95624. The event may end early if capacity is reached.
Dump Day collection is limited to items such as metal, plastic, fiberglass, fabric, glass, wood, mattresses, household appliances and landscape trimmings.
Additional items will be accepted on a limited basis including:
- E-Waste (up to 4 each per vehicle) including televisions, computer monitors and accessories, VCRs, CD/DVD players, stereo equipment, microwaves, etc.
- Tires (up to 6 each per vehicle) removed from wheels
- Concrete, dirt, rocks, asphalt, sand, brick and other construction materials (up to a half-yard per vehicle)
Items that will not be accepted include treated wood waste, asbestos of any kind, compressed gas, or hazardous waste. Hazardous waste includes paint, batteries, oils, acids, aerosol cans, household chemicals, corrosives, hazardous waste bases, etc. Information on where to locate approved hazardous waste disposal facilities in Sacramento County can be found on the Sacramento County website.
Caltrans reminds motorists to properly secure and tarp all cargo loads prior to driving. Transporting unsecured loads is unsafe, illegal, and pollutes California's roads and waterways. Loads that are not tied down/secured by tarps/nets or enclosed will not be accepted.
Tips for securing your load:
- Completely cover loads with tarps or cargo nets. Debris can escape from gaps.
- Remove loose material and trash before driving.
- Don't overload; keep materials level with your truck bed.
- Put light items lower, tie large items to the vehicle for traffic safety.
Collection space is limited and the event may be cancelled or rescheduled due to priority maintenance needs including winter operations.
