FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

YOLO COUNTY — To help relieve congestion and make merging safer for motorists, Caltrans will activate a new on-ramp meter on southbound Interstate 5 from Old River Road just north of the Sacramento River.

This meter is tentatively scheduled to be activated on November 8, 2021. The metering hours will be based on traffic demand and will activate anytime when minimum traffic thresholds are met.

The ramp meter will be active every day including weekends and holidays. To help alert the public of the changes, the meter has been set to rest in green on November 1, 2021.

The meter will have expanded hours of operation, which will allow the signal to also manage non-commute congestion with on demand metering.

The same method was used on southbound State Route 65 in Placer County from Lincoln to Roseville about three years ago and was repeated for State Route 99 in Sacramento County about two years ago.

Studies have found ramp meters are an effective way to reduce freeway congestion and collisions, improve travel time and make merging onto the freeway safer.

Work is scheduled to begin as listed but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/ or materials, and construction-related issues.
