Auburn – Caltrans is advising motorists to expect travel delays on State Route 49 (SR-49) in Auburn from the Interstate 80 separation to Dry Creek Road.

State Route 49 in AuburnBeginning Sunday, August 8, electrical crews will begin replacing traffic signal controller cabinets at various intersections within the 4.2-mile segment. Crews will be working nightly between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. from August 8 through August 11. During the installation, signals will be dark with stop signs posted at the intersection.

Motorists traveling through the project area on SR-49 should expect delays and allow additional travel time. Drivers are also reminded to treat intersections with dark signals as all-way stops. The California Highway Patrol will be on site, monitoring traffic safety during construction.

The newer signal cabinets meet current standards and also accommodate additional fiber optic connections to improve telecommunication in the region. Electrical crews continue to work on replacing traffic signal timing loops with camera sensor systems that will better regulate signal timing along this section of the corridor.

The work is part of a $42.4 million project to rehabilitate existing pavement and drainage, improve operational features and upgrade pedestrian and bicycle facilities from the Interstate 80/SR 49 interchange to Dry Creek Road in Auburn. Completion is expected this summer.

Weather or unexpected events may delay or prolong the work. Caltrans advises motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert.” The department will issue construction updates on Twitter @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3.
