AUBURN – Caltrans is advising motorists to be aware of a planned lane shift on State Route (SR) 49 in Auburn between Palm Avenue and Nevada Street/Marguerite Mine Road tonight.

Construction crews will be re-striping lanes overnight Monday, Dec. 21 between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. and shifting northbound traffic to the right, back to the original lane configuration. Crews will also be removing lane delineators to restore the median turn lane, permitting southbound left turns into businesses along this stretch of the highway.

The temporary traffic shift had enabled crews to construct a northbound Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant sidewalk and concrete barrier along the embankment. In addition to the sidewalk, the northbound highway shoulder has also been widened for a class II bike lane as part of Caltrans’ commitment to multimodal methods of transportation. Final concrete work on the northbound sidewalk is anticipated over the next few weeks.

In addition, crews will continue striping work on various segments of SR-49 between Interstate 80 and Dry Creek Road Tuesday night. Motorists should anticipate overnight work and intermittent lane closures between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The work is part of a $42.4 million project to rehabilitate existing pavement and drainage, improve operational features and upgrade pedestrian and bicycle facilities from the Interstate 80/SR 49 interchange to Dry Creek Road in Auburn. Completion is expected in summer 2021.

Weather or unexpected events may delay or prolong the work. Caltrans advises motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert.” The department will issue construction updates on Twitter @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3.
