FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sacramento County — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is scheduled to close the on-ramp from southbound Howe Avenue to westbound U.S. Highway 50 for roadway excavation.

A contractor is scheduled to widen and repave the ramp beginning Monday, April 20 at 6:00 a.m. until Saturday, April 25 at 6:00 a.m.

The closure is necessary for the safety of motorists and workers. Caltrans advices motorists to use an alternate route and “Be Work Zone Alert” – someone’s loved one is at work.

The work is part of the SAC 50 Auxiliary Lane Project. The closure was originally scheduled for the week of April 13 but was postponed due to construction related issues. Dry conditions are necessary for crews to perform the work and since rain is forecasted for April 20 and 21, the closure may be rescheduled for a later date if the area gets heavy rain.

The $4 million project will preserve and extend the pavement life, improve the overall ride quality and the nighttime visibility with new striping and added lighting. The addition of another lane to the ramp will help with traffic flow.

Suggested Alternate Route:

  • From southbound Howe Avenue continue to the eastbound U.S. Highway 50 South Lake Tahoe on-ramp. Take eastbound US-50 to Watt Avenue (Exit 11) and turn left at Watt Avenue. Stay in the far-right lane and re-enter westbound US-50.

Work is scheduled to begin as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/ or materials, and construction related issues.

Check out the Caltrans QuickMap for current road conditions or download the free QuickMap app on the App Store or Google Play. Motorists also can call the California Highway Information Network automated phone service at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623).
