FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COLFAX – Caltrans is announcing the beginning of a new operational improvement project in Colfax that will extend the existing westbound Interstate 80 on-ramp from State Route 174 with a standard-length acceleration and merge lane.

The $1.8 million project is scheduled to begin construction the week of April 6 with initial construction work consisting of tree removal in the project area. Project funding is provided by the State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) Operational Improvements fund.

“This project complements the new City of Colfax roundabout that was constructed in 2019 to relieve queues, improve traffic operations and enhance the economic viability of the South Auburn Street corridor,” said Caltrans District 3 Director Amarjeet S. Benipal. “A standard-length acceleration and merge lane increases the safety of motorists traveling from Colfax and improves the operation of Interstate 80.”

Baldwin Contracting Company of Chico is the contractor for the project, with completion estimated in late spring or summer 2020.

Intermittent lane and on-ramp closures are anticipated during construction, although full on-ramp closures are not immediately scheduled. Detours during full on-ramp closures will be implemented. The contractor is permitted lane and on-ramp closures during the following periods:

Interstate 80 Colfax westbound with at least one freeway lane open:

  • Monday through Friday: 6 p.m. through 6 a.m.
  • Saturday: 7 p.m. through 7 a.m.
  • Sunday: 9 p.m. through 7 a.m.

Interstate 80 Colfax westbound on-ramp full closure:

  • Monday through Friday: 6 p.m. through 6 a.m.
  • Saturday: 7 p.m. through 7 a.m.
  • Sunday: 9 p.m. through 7 a.m.

Weather or unexpected events may delay or prolong the work. Caltrans advises motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert.” The department will issue construction updates on Twitter @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3.
